Beowulf is a story of a hero of the Geats where he fights three different monsters. He gathers fourteen of the bravest Geat warriors and sets sails from his home over to a land where Hrothgar, King of the Danes lives at. Beowulf hears that Hrothgar has troubles with a seamonster named Grendel, who lives at the bottom of a nearby swampland. Grendel has killed many people and many people have attempted to kill him. When Beowulf and his men arrive at a lavish hall called Heorot, they are greeted by the members of Hrothgar's court. Beowulf tells the king about his previous success as a warrior, particularly his success in fighting sea monsters. Hrothgar welcomes the arrival of the Geats, hoping that Beowulf will live up to his reputation. Before the night ends, Hrothgar promises Beowulf great treasures if he succeeds against the monster. Grendel appears on the night of the Geats' arrival at Heorot. Everyone that attempted to kill Grendel always wore armor and used weapons. Beowulf said the wouldn't use weapons, bragging that he is stronger than anyone else. He is true to his word and wrestles the monster barehanded. In the battle with Grendel, Beowulf wins the battle and finally Grendel dies.In the second fight, Beowulf struggles against Grendel’s mom. Before he goes out to slay her, he puts on his armor and gets his sword. This tells us that this fight will be a lot harder than the one with Grendel, as there was no need for armor and weapons during his previous fight. Grendel’s mom grabs Beowulf a lot and Beowulf struggles to escape every time. When he hit her with his sword, it bounced off and did nothing. In the end, Beowulf finds a giant sword and kills Grendel’s mom with it.
In the third and final fight, Beowulf is an old man now and isnt as strong as he was when he fought grendel. A thief steals a jeweled cup from a sleeping dragon. Beowulf goes to the cave where the dragon lives to destroy him. During the battle, Beowulf breaks his sword against the dragon's side; the dragon, enraged shoots fire flames and wounds Beowulf in the neck. Wiglaf, out of Beowuld's people, rushes through the flames to assist him. Wiglaf stabs the dragon with his sword, and Beowulf, in a final act of courage, cuts the dragon in half with his knife.Yet the damage is done. Beowulf realizes that he's dying, that he has fought his last battle. He asks Wiglaf to bring him the dragon's lair of treasures; seeing the jewels and gold will make him feel that the effort has been worthwhile. He instructs Wiglaf to build a tomb to be known as "Beowulf's tower" on the edge of the sea. In keeping with his instructions, the dragon's treasure is buried alongside Beowulf's ashes in the tomb. The poem ends as it began..with the funeral of a great warrior.
